Some women served in the Civil War. Some were soldiers. And some were spies, nurses, sutlers, and as Union and Confederate soldiers. Women like Dorothea Dix, Rose O'Neal Greenhow, and Clara Barton had great rolls in the Civil War. Dorothea Dix was the Superintendent of Army Nurses. Dix brought order to the hospitals in the North and South. Rose O'Neal Greenhow was a spy for the Confederacy. She gave a message to General Beuaregard that had allowed him to win the First Battle of Bull Run. Clara Barton was the founder of the American Red Cross. During the Civil War she took medical supplies to the battlefields and helped nurse the wounded soldiers.
